Day Trips
Lapham Community Center organizes day trips 4-6 times each year to nearby places of interest; i.e.,
the recent trips to the Doris Duke Farm in New Jersey and the Vienna Boys Choir at Mohegan Sun.
Anyone wishing to help organize trips or act as a trip leader should call Nancy at 594-3620.

New York City Waterfalls

NYC Waterfalls      The New York City Waterfalls, a major new work of public art by internationally acclaimed artist Olafur Eliasson, will be on view in New York's East River from June 26th through October 13th 2008. Commissioned by Public Art Fund, the project consists of four monumental, man-made waterfalls temporarily installed at sites along the waterfront in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Governors Island. Each waterfall is 90-120 feet tall, the highest approximately the same height as the Statue of Liberty.

     You will see the Waterfalls aboard the luxurious cruise ship, the Zephyr. Surrounded by spectacular sights outside and elegant amenities inside, you will get an up close view while hearing an audio introduction from the artist who created them.

     The bus will depart the Waveny House parking lot at 9:30 a.m. with an anticipated arrival at the South Street Seaport at 11:15. You will then have about 2 1/2 hrs. to tour the Seaport including time for lunch on your own. The Zephyr will sail at 1:30 and you will leave for home around 3:00 p.m.

     Make a reservation with your check for $53 (checks payable to Senior Center) which includes round-trip coach, cruise, South Street Seaport coupon book and driver's tip. Drop it off at Lapham or mail to PO Box 83, New Canaan. Questions? 594-3620 or email us back.

Take the bus to the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Tuesday, September 23, $25
     Here's an easy way to go to the Met. The bus will leave Waveny Park at 9:15 a.m. You will then have approximately four hours to see your favorite exhibits, have lunch or visit the Gift Shop. The bus will leave the Met promptly at 2:30 p.m. with an expected return to Waveny around 4 p.m.
     Your fee of $25 is for the round-trip coach plus driver's tip. Entrance fees, lunch, etc. are not included.

Fall Foliage Luncheon Cruise on the Lady Katharine + Mark Twain House Tour

Lady Katharine        You will leave from the Charter Oak Landing in Hartford for a trip down the picturesque Connecticut River. You will cruise for two and one-half hours and enjoy a lunch buffet while watching the beautiful autumn scenery.
       After the cruise you will travel to the Mark Twain House in Hartford for a tour of this National Historic Landmark and Tiffany decorated home where Samuel Clemens raised his family and wrote from 1874 to 1891.
Mark Twain House        You will depart Waveny House at 9:15 a.m. and arrive home around 6 p.m. The fee of $87 includes round-trip coach, luncheon cruise with tax & gratuity, admission to the Mark Twain House with a 45 minute guided house tour and a few minutes in the Gift Shop, and the driver's gratuity.

Bruce Museum - Paris Portraits: Artists, Friends, and Lovers

       At no other time and place was portraiture as rich as in early-20th-century Paris. Our favorite docent, Salli Garrick, will give you a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Parisian avant-garde as revealed through art. Among the artists represented are Picasso, Matisse, Brancusi, Modigliani, Duchamp, and Beckmann; and the celebrities portrayed include Jean Cocteau, Josephine Baker, Gertrude Stein, Ambroise Vollard, and Kiki de Montparnasse.

The Great Russian Nutcracker presented by
the Moscow Ballet at West Point
Saturday, November 22, matinee, $94
     You will travel to the Eisenhower Hall Theater at West Point for this Broadway level spectacle that features dazzling costumes, a 50 member all-star Russian cast, hand-painted sets, larger-than-life puppets, and breathtaking scenic design. Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker is beloved by audiences and praised by critics. Lunch will be a buffet at the Thayer Hotel, a national historic landmark built in 1926 set on a hilltop overlooking the Hudson River.
     Your fee of $94 includes the round-trip coach, driver's tip, lunch, and show ticket.

Please let us know asap if you are interested as the earlier we buy tickets, the better seats we get.
