Genealogy Databases

Searchable records compiled or organized by general subject matter: marriages in New Hampshire, Civil War veterans etc. These databases can either be on line or on CDs. In some cases, they may be borrowed from the New Canaan or Darien Library. Some on-line databases will charge a fee for their use. Many of the organizations supplying this service permit some free investigation. The best approach is to give them a look to see if they can provide useful assistance in your search. Ancestry.com is a fee-based service - very extensive databases and more being added weekly. Many of their databases are free. Note - Both the Darien and New Canaan libraries have a subscription to the Ancestry.com service.

FamilySearch.org - operated by the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church. Free - one of the best - based on their extensive records. The Ancestral File pedigrees are submitted by members of the church and the IGI (International Genealogical Index) which are extractions from records of births,deaths, marriages, christenings, etc. - very worth while.

UK & Ireland Genealogy - the GENUKI site provides information on a vast array of historical, public and private data that has been provided by government sources, family history societies and genealogy volunteers. Data is available online, through email lists to volunteers and from online publications produced by Public Records Offices. The information is organized at both the country level and the county level.

RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) http://www.rootsweb.com - a listing of all the names which have been submitted to RootsWeb and the name of the submitter, so that if you think there is a fit, you can contact them.

Surname Helper http://surhelp.rootsweb.com - a search engine for queries and surname registrations.

Surname Web - http://www.surnames.com - a searchable genealogy registry.

Kindred Konnections - basically a collection of submitted information, some very good and some of the wishful thinking variety and without good sources. The initial looks are free, then you can decide whether to pay for further investigation.
